BLYTHE HILL DIONYSUS - Eddie Peake Performance at The Bomb Factory Marylebone

As part of Freed From Desire, The Bomb Factory Art Foundation presents Blythe Dionysus, a new short-form performance by artist Eddie Peake.

Euripides’ The Bacchae, an inspiration for much of Peake’s work, forms the departure point of Blythe Hill Dionysus. Starring his ten year old niece Edith Powles as an amalgamation of a variety of characters including Bacchus himself, Tiresius the blind seer, various messengers and indeed the Maenads, this will be the first performance Peake has made that will directly draw upon Euripides’ text.

The short performance also features a chorus, a motif typical of Peake’s work and indeed an integral part of The Bacchae as well as Greek plays in general. The chorus in Blythe Hill Dionysus will be made up of various members of Peake’s family.

Eddie Peake is a British artist whose multidisciplinary practice encompasses painting, sculpture, performance and sound. His exhibitions often bring together brightly coloured paintings, sculptural installations and body-painted performers to explore desire, shame and masculinity. Drawing on autobiographical experiences, his work examines questions of identity and the relationship between performers and audiences, often exploring the tensions between verbal and non-verbal communication. Alongside his visual art practice, Peake DJs under a pseudonym and runs the record label Hymn.

Bringing live performance into the gallery, Peake’s new work reflects the exhibition’s celebration of spaces where people can come together and express themselves freely. With a young person at its centre, the work also looks towards the next generation, highlighting the importance of spaces where young people can participate in cultural life, while raising questions about the lack of public funding and support for

the creative spaces that make such opportunities possible.
