The Bomb Factory Art Foundation is pleased to present Broken Spirit, a solo exhibition by artist S. Riley, running from the 3rd to the 13th of February at our Holborn gallery space.
Broken Spirit is an immersive installation that delves into Riley’s personal relationship with key figures from his childhood, exploring the delicate balance between strength and fragility. Through his emotive work, Riley examines themes of self-reflection, re-evaluation, and the universal human capacity to grow from adversity.
At the heart of the exhibition are striking anatomical forms crafted from leather, a medium Riley describes as “organic, strong, and resilient, yet capable of transformation.” These pieces symbolise the coexistence of vulnerability and resilience, reflecting Riley’s own journey of healing. Growing up in a single-parent household, Riley was profoundly inspired by the strength and silent suffering of his mother, who hid her struggles behind smiles and unwavering support. Now, as a father of four sons, he uses his work to explore and honour the pain and strength of others’ experiences.
Riley’s work challenges societal norms and invites meaningful conversations, particularly around mental health. He highlights the stigma surrounding mental health in West Indian and African communities, where strength is often prioritised, and emotional expression is seen as a weakness. Through Broken Spirit, Riley hopes to create a space where vulnerability is embraced as a vital part of the human experience.
Broken Spirit provides a profound meditation on the influential figures from Riley’s past and how they overcame their own challenges. The works on display invite viewers to consider the shared struggles and inner strength that shape our lives, capturing the nuanced interplay between childhood memories and the enduring lessons they offer.
