The Bomb Factory presents NARCHITECTURE, a solo exhibition by Max Jones that delves into the emotional and psychological landscapes of the self. Through intricately layered, cut-through paintings that blur the line between canvas and conceptual sculpture, Jones invites viewers to explore themes of mental health, trauma, identity, and social structure.
Prior to his fine art degree, Jones studied architecture, bringing a distinctive fusion of disciplines to his work. Jones’s practice reflects a deep fluency in image-making and spatial composition - yet rejects the polish of digital work. He employs DIY tools like sanders and filling knives to carve through layers of past paintings and offset drawings, exposing what he calls “relics of past thoughts.” These excavated forms resemble open wounds, anatomical cross-sections, or fragments of frescoes - raw, awkward, and emotionally charged.
Jones refers to some of these works as “drawings of emotional wounds” - gestures of excavation rather than decoration. Each piece is worked on over a prolonged period of time, allowing for the artist to revisit the composition repeatedly to uncover spontaneity and variety within the painterly process. In this sense, each work is the distillation of a unique set of temporal experiences, as opposed to the outcome of a preconceived idea.
“I’d like viewers to be challenged,” says Jones. “I’m not interested in making pretty paintings. These works aren’t designed to be easily digestible - they exist in awkwardness, brutality, and contradiction.”
Max Jones has long approached art-making as both inquiry and survival. His return to practice was catalysed during the COVID-19 lockdowns. NARCHITECTURE is a culmination of that journey: a process of breaking down and rebuilding, of sifting through visual language to find something truer, messier, and more human.
