SOL SATO - Bomb Factory X Salón ACME 13, Mexico City

The Woman Who Entered the City of Mirrors is a solo exhibition by Sol Golden Sato, presented from the 5th to the 8th of February 2026 as part of the 13th edition of Salón ACME during Mexico City Art Week. This marks the Bomb Factory Art Foundation’s first international exhibition.

The exhibition is a mythopoetic exploration of Afro Mexican identity, ancestral memory and the fragmentary nature of historical archives. Working across painting, sculpture and immersive installation, Sato constructs a dreamlike archive in which history, myth and diasporic memory converge.

The work is inspired by a dream visitation from Isabel de Olvera, a free Afro Mexican woman who in 1600 petitioned for her freedom before joining an expedition to New Spain, now New Mexico. Sato reimagines Olvera’s journey as a metaphysical passage through a surreal City of Mirrors, where migration, resistance and rebirth unfold through layered symbolism. Olvera’s petition becomes a timeless act of self determination, echoing across centuries of displacement and survival.

The exhibition comprises three monumental paintings, three smaller triptychs and a central sculptural work made from fabric and African terracotta bead heads. An accompanying soundscape incorporates spoken word and diasporic rhythms drawn from Afro Mexican musical traditions, including son jarocho and danzón, creating an immersive environment in which history and imagination intersect.
