Farnaz Gholami
My art practice encompasses painting, drawing, printmaking, and installation. I create expansive picture plains, usually depicting ambiguous unpopulated urban landscapes or interior spaces, to consider the sense of in-betweenness. Based on my diasporic experience of living in different cultures and countries, I explore the ideas of dislocation and internal fragmented identity through interaction with my surrounding spaces, buildings, cities, and natures, intertwined with memory and imagination. In my paintings, I use familiar subjects from different cultures such as architecture, gardens, swimming pools, street lamps, or hammocks as devices to break the stereotype of otherness, and suggest familiarity in new undefinable inclusive spaces.
